If you love snowsports, thrills and the mountains, then downhill mountain biking is for you! Here’s everything you need to know about the discipline in Les 2 Alpes.

Downhill mountain biking, also known as DH or simply Downhill, started out as an elite sport but has become increasingly accessible to more and more people in recent years. For those who don’t yet know about it, it involves riding only on downhill mountain biking runs for maximum thrills! Just like skiers, mountain bikers take ski lifts to the top of the runs, using Mountain Biking lift passes

Les 2 Alpes has created 91 kilometres of mountain biking runs, which are signposted just like they are in Alpine skiing: green for beginners, blue for intermediates, red for experienced mountain bikers and black for experts. The runs are very different from each other, but they all comprise dirt tracks of varying widths, banked turns of varying heights and jumps that vary in difficulty. The better you get, the more complicated the runs become: footbridges, banks, screes, steps, tables… There is even a new Elite run which will host the French leg of the Downhill Mountain Biking European Cup.

Take note though, you can’t just venture out on downhill mountain biking runs on any old mountain bike. DH bikes have front and rear suspension with approx. 200mm suspension forks. You should also think about protective gear: helmets, elbow pads, kneepads, back protection… If you don’t have your own protective equipment, specialist shops are available in the resort.

Think about taking DH mountain biking lessons, which are ideal for getting started and picking up good habits. Les 2 Alpes’ Tourist Office, in association with its partner GIANT, also runs free introductory sessions once a week throughout the summer for women! A beginners’ zone named Easy 2 Ride is open to everyone just close to Les Lutins Ski tow. In the same area, if you want to capture your first mountain biking jump on film for posterity, a run is equipped with cameras just like La piste aux étoiles.

This summer in Les 2 Alpes, downhill mountain biking will be the star of several events. First is the MTB Opening Party from the 17th to 19th of June: a friendly, welcoming event offering a fun way to set off and explore Les 2 Alpes’ mountain biking area. From the 1st to the 3rd of July, experience the thrill of the Mountain of Hell, between the 18th and 22nd of July, it’s 100% women’s week, a girls only event to get you started with mountain biking, and finally between the 22nd and the 24th of July, you can follow the French leg of the Downhill Mountain Biking European Cup.
